Assembling your "LIVE NINE" rearend

Always wear eye protection when using your motor tool !

 1) Determine the wheel spacing of your car's rear wheels.
   a) Assemble the kit's rearend assembly without glue.
   b) Measure the spacing of the cars's rear wheels
       backplate to backplate.

 2) Make the pinion shaft carrier bushing from 3/32 brass
   a) Determine length from worksheet.
   b) Cut to length and finish the ends.

 3) Make the pinion shaft from 1/16 steel rod.
   a) Determine the pinion shaft length from worksheet
   b) Cut to length and finish the ends.

 4) Reduce the diameter of the pinion shaft over a distance
of 1/16" at one end of the shaft.
   a) Use a mill file or sand paper to reduce the diameter of
the pinion shaft end while turning it in your motor tool
until it just fits snuggly, without forcing, into the pinion gear.
   b) Mount the pinion to the pinion shaft with CA.

 5) Insert the assembled pinion shaft/pinion gear into the carrier
bushing and insert the assembly into the LIVE NINE front
     casting (gear inward).
   a) Oil the shaft lightly before inserting into the carrier bushing.
   b) Apply a petrolatum barrier at outside end.

 6) Make the universal joint yoke from 3/32 brass.
   a) Cut to length and finish ends.
   b) It is useful to slide this over a 1/16 piece of
wire rod to assist finishing the ends.

 7) Glue the universal yoke to the pinion shaft with CA.
    a) Be sure the petrolatum barrier is applied before gluing.

 8) Cut off the back collar from the TOMY/AFX ring gear.
   a) Use a jeweler's saw or razor saw and remove the
shoulder on the back side of the ring gear.

 9) Make the axles from 3/32" brass tube.
   a) Determine the axle lengths from the worksheet.
   b) Cut and finish the ends of the left and right axles.

10) Make the axle tubes from 1/8" brass tube.
   a) Determine the axle tube lengths from the worksheet.
   b) Cut and finish the left and right axle tubes.

11) Glue the axles onto the TOMY/AFX axles with CA.
   a) Remember to mount on correct sides if different length.
   b) Slide the axle clear up to the ring gear assembly.

12) Lightly oil the axles and apply petrolatum barriers at
both ring gear ends. Slide the axle tubes over the axles.

13) Lay the axle/axle tubes/ring gear assembly into the
      LIVE NINE front cover casting.
  a) Apply the petrolatum barriers
  b) Test assemble the rearend and clamp with clothes pins
on the castings axle bosses. Adjust pinion bushing
      for proper operation.
  c) Glue the pinion bushing with CA using an applicator.

14) Remove the clothes pins and apply petrolatum barriers.
   a) Apply a minimum of JB Weld or epoxy and position
      cover castings.
   b) Clamp with clothes pins.

15) Test for proper operation before setting aside to cure.

16) Paint as desired and mount the wheels.
   a) Clean exterior using tissue or swabs and acetone or
       lacquer thinner before painting.
